Nanotech to Boost Sports Car Performance

Filed under: Technology; Tagged as: ,

marussiaAn all-electric Russian sports car already making headlines is expected to get a power boost from nanotechnology. The battery-powered Marussia will leverage nanotechnology to allow it to travel 400 km on a single charge, even in Russia's extremely cold climate. Big things come in little packages, indeed.

Even though their Volgas look pretty neat, Russia has never been a super power in the auto industry. However, Nikolay Fomenko (former FIA N-GT racing champion, popular Russian singer, TV-anchor and theatrical actor) is trying to change that and wants to challenge foreign competitors with its newest project, Marussia. With only 35% of its body parts from Russia, Marussia is a hybrid that will use a Renault or Nissan 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine supposed to output some 240-hp, and an electric motor that will use nanotechnology to overcome those harsh winters in Russia. Expected to go from 0 to 62mph (100 km/h) in 5 seconds and with a price tag close to $100,000, the first Marussia will be shipped late 2009 even though experts are skeptical. Would you buy a Russian supercar if the deal would be good?
