    iPhone Rules the Market

Filed under: Technology; Tagged as: ,

Apple's iPhone is taking the market by force. According to a piece at Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog Apple has sold 8 million iPhone’s to date. But that's not an official stat from Apple, it's an approximation based on collected International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. A joint project of AFB and Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board have been collecting iPhone IMEI numbers and recording them on a big Google spreadsheet here.

According to the IMEIs Apple has manufactured at least 5,649,000 iPhone 3Gs. When you add to that the 2.4 million first-generation iPhone’s that Apple reported selling in the first six months of 2008, you get a total of more than 8 million iPhone’s. With Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn turning out more than 800,000 units per week, Apple appears to be on a pace to build its 10 millionth iPhone before the end of September.

Revealed sales reports tell that it only took apple 74 days to sell one million of its latest version of the iPhone. At that rate sales should exceed 40,000,000 units within one year. To contrast these incredible sales numbers, you have to understand that it took apple just about a year to sell six million of the first generation of iPhone’s!

Apple has said repeatedly that it hopes to sell 10 million iPhone’s in calendar 2008. It looks like the company may meet that goal with several months to spare.

    iPhone Network

    Filed under: Technology; Tagged as:

The iPhone is in hot demand? With a new and natural interface, good camera, GPS and a lot more, it's no wonder that its users' base is growing exponentially.

Let us imagine the identity implications here. The iPhone follows you, where you go. In essence, it in many ways is a part of you, and your identity. What if developers were to require real identify information and share with others to prove who you are. Much better authentication and security would be needed on the iPhone to keep this safe. If the iPhone were to already collect this information from the user for us, we'd have quite a useful app on our hands! Having a real identity to associate with each user, where they are at any moment is very powerful.

This is why the iPhone needs to have a Profile. Given that and the GPS support, a contacts list, and applications that can access that data and communicate back and forth, iPhone can form one of the world's largest Social Networks. With such a network, huge monetization potential may follow soon. Give iPhone a profile and what may follow is anyone's guess.

    Gadget of the Year

Filed under: Product Reviews; Tagged as: ,

Stuff Magazine readers have rated Apple's iPhone 3G as the "Gadget of the Year." What followed closely were Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, Nintendo's Wii Fit, and B&W's Zeppelin iPod speakers. All of the products up for this honor were judged in categories including performance, design and value, as well as "cool factor".

So what is iPhone for you? Browsing the web on iPhone is a treat and has made mobile web enjoyable. The visual elements, its ability to render images and graphics is superior than any other device. Fans of iPod will love it too as it packs the popular audio features and capabilities in one sleek gadget. If you are all about email, many consider Blackberry to be much better but the new push capabilities of iPhone are quite appealing. The touch interface is intuitive and easy. The GPS and Google map works quite well with the iPhone. There are many interesting new applications available which utilize GPS. This brings another interesting point: the very profitable Apple Store business model, which has resulted in huge number of interesting applications (some are free) available for download. Both the developers and Apple benefit from this approach.

Sale reports show the unprecedented growth in iPhone sale. When that is happening, Yahoo has announced that it will bring its oneConnect social address book application to Apple's App Store to work on both the iPhone and iPod touch.

Yahoo's oneConnect application lets users integrate contacts, send instant messages or SMS messages, and view their friends' latest activity on social networks. What's most compelling about oneConnect is that it doesn't bog you down in solely Yahoo software. Instead, the service supports AOL Instant Messenger along with Yahoo Messenger, and support for social networks like Facebook and MySpace. oneConnect for the iPhone and iPod Touch is available now as a free download on the App store and Yahoo promised that more versions will be rolling out for other devices in the near future.

    Future is now

    Filed under: Technology; Tagged as:

The iPhone is a from the family of the Internet appliances that are enabling web access on the move. Like many other complex systems, iPhone is the result of converging and enabling web collaborative technologies. There are many patents dating back as far as the 1960s.

The trend was set in by Infogear in 1998 when they combined the features of a regular phone and a web terminal. The company was later purchased by Cisco and no new products were marketed under the name between 2001 and 2006. This was followed by Apple iPhone now we are so familiar with. Apple iPhone is an Internet connected multimedia smart phone with a flush multi-touch screen and a minimal hardware interface. Lacking a physical keyboard, a virtual keyboard is rendered on the touch screen. The iPhone's functions include those of a camera phone and portable media player (equivalent to the iPod) in addition to text messaging and visual voicemail. It also offers Internet services including e-mail, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity.

Apple announced the iPhone on 9 January 2007 and it was fist introduced in the United States on 29 June 2007 and is in the process of being introduced worldwide. On 11 July 2008, the iPhone 3G was released that is supported by faster 3G data speeds and Assisted GPS. iPhone was named Time magazine's Invention of the Year in 2007. Trend watchers say it is going a long way in the future. I say the future is now.
